Shortly after forming in 2019, the Czech violin/cello/piano group Trio Bohémo — Matouš Peruška on violin, Kristina Vocetková on cello and Jan Vojtek on piano — entered the pandemic living together in the same big house.

“That made our group as a team really strong,” said Vocetková. “There was no escaping each other, so very early on, we learned how to spend time together without getting on each other’s nerves.”

Describing last year’s four-day recording session in England, Vocetková captured their astonishing chemistry: “We created something like a new family, but a family where everything is working perfectly.

“We’re all quite cheerful and positive. We share the same values and even the same outlook on politics, which is helpful.”

Just don’t talk or play music in the car with Peruška, who prefers silence when he can have it.

Before forming the trio, Vocetková and Peruška had played together in a string quartet and then as a duo. Ironically, the piano trio was their least favorite chamber music grouping, until one fateful day.

“Through a lucky coincidence, Matouš and I began playing as a trio with Jan,” Vocetková said. “We had this unique chemistry from the beginning. We clicked musically, understood one another without words and never looked back from that first day. It was destiny.”

They’ve by now spent so much time together that, when performing, their movements mirror one another in a precise, sometimes playful, sometimes passionate dance. No longer just three musicians, Trio Bohémo plays as a single organism that obviously delights in its own company.

Today, they’re fresh from capturing prize after prize in worldwide chamber music competitions and have graced stages from the Vienna Musikverein to London’s Wigmore Hall. Their current American tour, with a portfolio of 15 piano trios, comes on the heels of a debut CD that’s already receiving international kudos.

In another milestone, 2025 will see them for the first time perform two triple concertos on stage with a full orchestra.

“We have unlimited energy on stage,” said Vocetková. “And we always wanted to put it into practice. So we’re really looking forward to performing in what is basically a massive chamber music group.”

These three remarkable musicians launch the Grand Piano Series’ new year with three distinct takes on trios from three iconic composers: Haydn’s classical joyfulness, Smetana’s passion and Brahms’ heartbreaking Romantic lyricism, in which their expressiveness alone will bring the audience to tears.

“We try to hug people with Brahms’ music,” said Vocetková, smiling.

Vojtek noted in an earlier interview that Smetana was 30 when he composed the piano trio they will perform and that they were all about 30 when they recorded the same piece.

“We immediately felt a connection with this piece,” said Vocetková. “That’s why we decided to record it. It’s special to perform it, especially abroad, because it’s not as well-known as it should be. We love being its ambassadors.”

Their CD’s producer, Andrew Keener, said, “These wonderful young Czech musicians really love this piece to bits. And it shows — from the intellectual point of view, making the structure hang together, and from the emotional point of view, really such red-blooded, wonderful playing.” ¦
