Praised as a quartet whose “cellists are brilliant instrumentalists and thoughtful musicians individually, but their renditions as a group are glorious” (Arnold Steinhardt, Guarneri String Quartet), the Galvin Cello Quartet emerged after capturing the Silver Medal at the 2021 Fischoff Competition. Following this success, Galvin won the 2022 Victor Elmaleh Competition and joined the Concert Artists Guild roster. With members from Brazil, South Korea and the United States, the quartet takes its name from the Mary B. Galvin Recital Hall at Northwestern University’s Bienen School of Music, where Sydney Lee, Haddon Kay and Luiz Fernando Venturelli met as students of Hans Jørgen Jensen; James Baik joined in 2024.

The Galvin Cello Quartet champions the cello quartet as a vital chamber music form, presenting programs that reflect both tradition and contemporary life while highlighting diverse cultural perspectives. Recent highlights include performances and residencies at Rockport Music Festival, Bravo! Vail, Ravinia, Ascent International Cello Festival, Merkin Hall and Newport Classical. The ensemble is represented by Epstein Fox Performances and Dinin Arts.

Members have earned recognition individually: Lee is a top prizewinner at the Washington International Competition and Antonio Janigro International Cello Competition; Kay is a prizewinner at the George Enescu International Competition; Venturelli has appeared as a soloist with major Brazilian orchestras; and Baik is a First Prize winner of the 2023 Young Concert Artists International Auditions.
