Liszt — Sonata in b minor
Debussy — Estampes
Rachmaninoff — Piano Sonata No. 2 in B-flat Minor, Op. 36
“Four distinct musical worlds meet in this sweeping program by Enrique Granados, Franz Liszt, Claude Debussy and Sergei Rachmaninoff. Granados’s ‘The Maiden and the Nightingale’ opens with a love song full of longing. Liszt’s monumental Sonata in B minor follows, a single continuous half-hour arc that remains one of the summits of the Romantic repertoire. After intermission, Debussy’s Estampes travels from the pagodas of Java to the streets of Granada to a rain-soaked French garden. The evening closes with Rachmaninoff’s Second Sonata, a work of torrential virtuosity and rich Russian lyricism.”
